Your 6 week beginner program

This program will give you a taste of the exciting world of Latin dance, with the aim to have you having a blast on the social floor dancing Salsa & Bachata in just six weeks! You will enjoy being led through 6 classes of beginner focused content, with each class carefully designed to ensure you learn your basics properly, develop your confidence and just have a lot of fun together with others stepping into the Latin dance world for the first time!

Salsa - The Basic Step & Spot Turn

Let’s get to work! In week 1 the focus is on teaching you some basic steps and spot turns in Salsa footwork & partnerwork. Through fun exercises you will learn how to count Salsa timing, practice some simple fundamental steps, and have a lot of fun exploring the basics of ‘lead’ & ‘follow’ connection when dancing with a partner.

Salsa - Basics & The Cross Body Lead

Let’s review and practice what we did in week 1 and then it’s time to add a few more steps to your new skill! Practice some footwork in mini combinations, before we move into partnerwork and learn to incorporate the ‘cross body lead’ step which will help us to change directions on the social floor.

It’s Bachata Time

The much loved sister dance style of Salsa is the beautiful Bachata! Majority of Latin social nights will play both Salsa & Bachata music, so it’s fantastic to know the basics of both styles. Week 3 we’ll dance through the basic fundamentals of Bachata footwork & partnerwork. Enjoy learning the basic counts, steps and beautiful connection of this style.

Bachata Build Up

Let’s refresh what we did last week and then continue week 4 adding some new Bachata steps ready for the dance floor! Learn some basic turns, play with direction change and maybe a little bit of cheeky body movement. Finish the class practicing your ‘lead’ & ‘follow’ skills to music.

Consolidate, Celebrate & Continue

Now it’s time to review what we have learned so far in both the Salsa & Bachata styles. Bring any questions you have from our previous weeks, repeat and practice the moves you have learnt so far in weeks 1 - 4. Learn more about what makes a great leader & follower and what each role requires.

The Social Floor Practica

Let this be your first real social floor practice! We’ll share a group warm up in both Salsa & Bachata, then it’s time to practice everything you’ve learned so far to music at our ‘mini social’ with your peers. We’ll play some great Salsa & Bachata music, continually rotate partners and we’ll walk around and offer direct feedback and tips to help make your confidence soar.

It’s time to celebrate!

If you’re free at 12.45pm that same day after class, let’s go grab lunch on Week 6. Meet your new class mates, ask any questions you have to our teachers and get to know more about our school and community.

What our students are saying…

Experience the energy of Latin dance!

This is the best part, when you start to slowly find your confidence and then try it out with others on the floor! Plus, as an LEC student you’ll also have access to our unique school class videos and all of our library of content so you can practice at home.

  • No partner required or experience required! This is a beginner level program. We wiIl be rotating partners through class so you can practice with everyone. If you know someone who would make a good partner, encourage them to join us too!

  • Some light and comfortable clothing, and flat shoes with non-grip soles are best. We recommend you bring a towel, a spare t-shirt if you tend to sweat a lot, and a water bottle.

  • We do not allow casual attendance, you must attend all six sessions. Each week incorporates elements from previous weeks so it’s important to attend all for progression reasons.

  • We welcome all ages in our classes, we currently have people in their 20’s and people in their 60’s+. Dance is for everyone.

  • Not at all! This program is open to absolutely everyone.

  • LEC is located right near the North Melbourne train station. There is also street parking available on Abbotsford street and many surrounding streets.
